About The Role

We have an exciting opportunity within Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s Legal and Governance Service and we are looking for highly motivated and proactive Democratic Services Officers to join a small dynamic team.

The post is offered on a Fixed Term Maternity Cover Contract / Secondment for a period of up to 9 Months. If applying for the position as a secondment, you must obtain your line manager’s approval before applying for the position.

Democratic Services Officers are primarily responsible for providing support services to Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s democratic decision-making process, supporting our elected members and various committees. These roles also support the processing of all Freedom of Information requests received by the Council; including logging, reviewing and referring requests, collecting information, and collating final responses for review, working together with our Information Governance officers and legal advisers as required.

Although the hours for this role are 37 per week, the working hours are not always 9 to 5, Democratic Services Officers are required to attend regular evening meetings therefore the post holder must be available to work "out of the normal office hours" during the week as dictated by the requirements of the service.

About You

  

The ideal candidate will possess excellent written and verbal communications skills. They will be organised, accurate, able to work under pressure to predetermined deadlines and have a sound understanding of local government.

Experience of working in a democratic or information governance role in a local authority or a similar organisation would be extremely beneficial, but it is not essential, although minute taking experience is an essential part of this role.

Candidates must possess excellent IT skills, be proficient in the use of ICT systems (experience of using CMIS, the Council’s Committee Management System would be an advantage) and have a willingness to meet challenges with enthusiasm and confidence.
